WORLD BEE DAY ~ 20 MAY 2021

WORLD BEE DAY – 20 MAY 2021

The main purpose of World Bee Day is to spread awareness of the significance of bees and other pollinators for our survival. Beekeepers and nature conservationists are united in encouraging improved conditions for bees to build pollination security and to safeguard our food security.

WE NEED BEES!

  • for FOOD SECURITY • for BIODIVERSITY • and for ECOSYSTEM HEALTH •

Here are 3 ways to HELP BEES:

  1. GO CHEMICAL FREE FOR BEES

Synthetic pesticides and fertilizers (amongst many other household chemicals and cleaning agents) are harmful to bees and other beneficial insects. Rather use organic products and natural solutions. White Wine Vinegar and Apple Cider Vinegar can be used as effective weed killers. Epsom Salt is a completely safe, non-toxic, bee friendly plant fertilizer. Essential Oils such as Orange, Peppermint and Lemongrass work wonders on repelling unwanted insects, without killing bees. (Mix 10 drops of each oil in 500ml water in a spray bottle).

Given that bees are our main pollinator, it doesn’t make sense to use pesticides that have been proven to kill them, especially when there are alternatives that are safe, easy to use, and cost effective.

  1. PLANT A BEE GARDEN

One of the biggest threats to bees is a lack of habitat. By planting a Bee Garden, you can provide bees with a safe habitat with plants that are rich in pollen and nectar.

Bee Friendly South African Trees: Karee, Bush Willow and Sweet Thorn

Bee Friendly South African Flowering Plants: Cape Honeysuckle, Agapanthus, Violets & Daisies

Don’t forget the Bee Bath! Bees get thirsty too 😊

  1. TEACH TOMORROW’S BEE STEWARDS

Teach kids about the importance of bees and other pollinators, and the different types of bees. Give children a lifelong love and appreciation for bees and everything they do for the world. Make it FUN! The more fun they have learning, the more they’ll engage!
